I already called Blackfish Tavern in Northport one of my favorite wing discoveries in years.
Now, just in time for football season, there are even more reasons to come back. Every game, every time.
And Definitely, Football Sundays at Blackfish Tavern. EPIC!
Wings. Burgers. Cold beer. Proper cocktails. Spicy Bloody Marys. Plenty of TVs. And groups settling in for Sunday football.
But this isn't about turning Blackfish into another sports bar. It's about being able to watch the games while eating some of the best Buffalo wings I've found on Long Island inside a restaurant where the food, cocktails and hospitality can stand entirely on their own.
🍗 First Things First: These Wings Are Different
I've been hunting Long Island's best wings since 2011, and Blackfish immediately got my attention.
The process starts with fresh, never-frozen Mountaire jumbo wings, seasoned before they're cooked with Blackfish's proprietary blend.
Then things get interesting.
The wings are cooked inside a Rational iCombi Pro, where the controlled cooking environment helps retain moisture and produces remarkably juicy chicken.
Then they're flash-finished in beef tallow.
Non-additive, "Liquid Gold" Beef Tallow by Tallow Long Island to be exact.
Not to cook them.
To give them that final crunch.
Crunchy outside. Succulent and juicy inside.
That's the Blackfish difference. It's also one of the more thoughtful wing-cooking processes I've encountered during my years of reviewing wings
🔥 Then Comes the Buffalo Sauce

Blackfish makes its Buffalo sauce in-house around Frank's cayenne pepper sauce and heavy cream.
The cream doesn't erase what makes Buffalo sauce Buffalo.
The cayenne is there. The tang is there. The heat is there.
It simply rounds everything out into an incredibly balanced sauce that keeps pulling you back for another wing.
And yes—the blue cheese is homemade too.

🏆 Another Wing Hunter Joins the Review
Recently, I invited Long Island's newest wing hunter, The Wing Scout, to Blackfish Tavern to see what he thought.
The verdict?
9.1 Score for the Buffalo wings.
That officially put Blackfish into The Wing Scout's infamous “9 Club”—his collection of wings scoring 9.0 or higher. His top score criteria.
And Buffalo wasn't the only one that impressed him.
Chef Ian brought out his special Lemon Pepper Wing, combining characteristics of a wet and dry-style wing with real lemon zest and freshly ground black pepper, finished in Tallow Long Island's beef tallow—the “Liquid Gold.”
It scored insanely high too at 8.9. Just whispers away from another BIG 9.
For me, seeing another dedicated wing hunter come through Blackfish and reach essentially the same conclusion only reinforced what I said the first time:
I had found one of the best wing experiences I've had on Long Island in a long time.
That was my original verdict, and it remains the backbone of this review.
🎥 Watch The Wing Scout Review Blackfish Tavern's Wings
And then it was my turn.
I sat down with The Wing Scout's own BBQ sauce on Blackfish's beef-tallow-finished wings.
Ruby red. Original-style BBQ. And most importantly, a flavor completely its own.
Using The Wing Scout's scale?
Scored Well above a 9.
Delicious sauce. Fantastic wing. Dangerous combination.
Here's where this gets especially interesting for Northport.
Blackfish is rolling into football season with an in-house Sunday wing special:
8 Wings — $12
12 Wings — $17
25 Wings — $32
50 Wings — $60
IN-HOUSE ONLY
That makes the larger orders particularly interesting when you're getting a group together, grabbing a table and settling in for the games.
And if Sunday isn't enough, Wing Wednesday gives you another excuse to get your wing fix during the week with the same Wing Specials!
🍔 The Smashburger Deserves Its Own Trip

My opinion of the Smashburger has actually gone up since my original review.
This is now one of the best Smashburgers I've had.
Two properly smashed patties with those crispy edges you actually want, cheese, pickles and special sauce.
But there's another reason it works so well:
That potato bun.
Blackfish has its own in-house bakery, and this may be the best potato bun I've ever had on a burger.
It's a true Smashburger.
And on Football Sunday, I'd go one of two directions with it:
Cold beer.
Or a properly made Old Fashioned over a large clear cube.

That's where Blackfish separates itself from the ordinary game-day experience.
You can have wings and beer—but you can also sit down with a legitimately great burger and a properly executed cocktail.
The only proper size cube for an Old Fashioned I have seen on LI.
They meticulously choose craft whiskey for this incredible authentic Old Fashioned.
Well worth it.
🍔 Don't Sleep on the 8 oz Wagyu Burger

Then there's the 8 oz Wagyu burger.
Insanely juicy. Flavorful. Exactly the kind of substantial burger that belongs next to a cold beer during a game.
Or do what I'd do:
Pair it with the Blackfish Old Fashioned.
Burger and beer.
Burger and cocktail.
Both work.
🔥 September 13: Football Sunday Wing Fest

🍺 Sunday Football—Without the Dive-Bar Experience
This may ultimately be what makes Blackfish such a good fit for Football Sundays.
You don't have to choose between watching the games and going somewhere that actually feels like a good restaurant.
Get wings and a beer.
Have a Spicy Bloody Mary during the early games.
Order a Smashburger.
Move into an Old Fashioned later in the afternoon.
Bring friends who care about the game—and friends who care more about the food and cocktails.
Blackfish already had the comfortable bar, indoor dining, outdoor spaces and hospitality.
The original review also found the restaurant polished without feeling formal—the exact “classy casual” balance that makes it different from any old sports bar.
It's Sunday football—just with better food and better drinks.
🥇 The Wing Man's Verdict
My first visit convinced me that Blackfish Tavern was a Buffalo Wing Destination.
The Wing Scout coming through and putting those Buffalo wings into his 9 Club with a 9.1 only strengthened the case.

Now add Lemon Pepper wings, Wing Scout BBQ, beef-tallow frying, Sunday wing specials, legitimately excellent burgers, cold beer, proper Old Fashioneds, Bloody Marys, TVs and a room full of people watching football?
Northport has the ingredients for one hell of a Football Sunday.
And come February Super Bowl?
I already know where wings from Blackfish are going to be on my mind.
But first, we have an entire football season to eat our way through.
